Today’s quality-driven health climate places a high call on infection prevention strategies to be population-based and capable of identifying and managing both high-profile healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and emerging infections across communities. High expectations are placed infection prevention professionals to go beyond the individual patient focus and proactively understand how infections impact system-level populations.
In essence, infection prevention efforts now sit at the intersection of population health and public health. Early detection strategies, surveillance and evidence-based treatment modalities must be advanced enough to enable infection prevention efforts to improve the outlook on population health.
On Wednesday, February 3, 2016, Russell N. Olmsted, MPH, CIC, director of infection prevention and control for the Trinity Health Unified Clinical Organization, will present an insightful webinar that will address the role of infection prevention and control in the era of population health. The presentation will include a description of the key elements of population health and its emerging impact on the provision of health care in the US, as well as review the current status of HAIs across the county. Russell will provide at least one example of evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of infection prevention and control efforts aimed at improving health of populations. He will also formulate at least one skill set of infection preventionists to support population health and prevent HAIs.
Russell N. Olmsted, MPH,CIC, has spent more than 30 years working in the fields of infection prevention and control and healthcare epidemiology. Russ serves as the Director of Infection Prevention and Control for the Trinity Health Unified Clinical Organization, located in Livonia, Michigan.
His education background includes a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Public Health in General Epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also holds board certification in infection prevention and control from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC).
